So what’s Party Girl all about?

“Queen of the Indies” Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused, Waiting for Guffman, The Daytrippers) shines in this lightweight comedy about a romance between a floundering downtown party girl and a falafel vendor set in Manhattan’s trendy loft and club scene. Posey is utterly charming as Mary, the 23-year-old whose talents are pretty much limited to “partying, flirting, making stuff up.” Her penchant for partying gets her evicted from her apartment, whereupon–unable to pay her fine or decide what she wants to do with her life–she receives financial and career help from her godmother, who gets her a job in the New York Public Library system. Does the Dewey decimal system hold the key to Mary’s future? Director Daisy von Scherler Mayer went on to direct Madeline (1998). –Jim Emerson

Personally, I thought Parker Posey was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Anthony DeSando.

While it might give spelunkers a few helpful hints about using their equipment, The Cave is strictly routine as an Alien-styled monster show. The film’s major achievement is its impressive setting — not a real cave under the Carpathian mountains (where the ill-fated characters are exploring “the Amazon of underground rivers”) but a lavishly convincing cave set built on a Romanian soundstage. This gives first-time director Brad Hunt (a second- and third-unit director on the Matrix trilogy) the movie’s only claim to originality, as the cavernous interiors become a death trap for most of the nine-person team (led by Cole Hauser, and including Morris Chestnut, Daniel Dae Kim from TV’s Lost, and Coyote Ugly’s Piper Perabo) that’s exploring the maze-like cave for reasons never fully explained (maybe they just wanted to test out their fancy gear). They’re not alone down there, and creature-feature specialist Patrick Tatopoulos borrows from the H.R. Giger design-book with some gnarly critters that, in turn, borrow elements from The Thing to foment suspicion and anxiety among the dwindling crew of survivors. It’s all familiar to genre buffs, but there’s just enough in The Cave to satisfy the curiosity of its intended audience. Dumped into theaters for a marginal release in late summer 2005, it’s precisely the kind of horror flick that finds a second life on DVD. –Jeff Shannon

The present recording was made at a performance in Busseto, Verdi’s birthplace, in the Emilia Romagna region. There, in 2001, a whole series of events marked the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death. The small, 328-seat Teatro Verdi, built in Verdi’s lifetime, provided the ensemble of La Scala, Milan, under its principal conductor Riccardo Muti, with a particularly captivating backdrop, and the mainly young singers — including 31-year-old shooting star Ambrogio Maestri in the title role, exciting young tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Fenton and internationally acclaimed Barbara Frittoli as Alice — gave superb performances. The special appeal of this production lies, however, not only in the excellent quality of the music; there is also the fact that the scenery and costumes were recreated from a historical performance of 1913. Back then, Arturo Toscanini had performed the work in the same location to mark Verdi’s 100th birthday. The orchestra at that performance was similarly reduced in forces, which means that this performance follows an altogether highly regarded tradition. What is more, this “chamber opera” version complies with the composer’s wish for the work to be staged in Sant’Agata (just a few miles from Busseto), and the intimacy of the theatre in Busseto certainly does correspond to the personal character of the work. The lively and witty direction of the young Italian Ruggero Cappuccio combines the historical backdrop with the vitality of modern direction.

Ok, let’s look at Frankenstein Island.

First, the movie is about The only color film from cult director Jerry Warren (THE WILD WORLD OF BAT WOMAN (1966)), FRANKENSTEIN ISLAND stars genre vets John Carridine and Cameron Mitchell in a tale concerning a hot air balloon which crashes on a mysterious island. The castaways discover that the island is overrun with zombies and a strange race of Amazons, and at the center of it all is a distant relative of the Frankensteins–who is once again trying to create a being out of dead body parts. Renowned for its maniacal story and less-than-convincing special effects, this film has garnered a befuddled cult following..

I really enjoyed the performace of Steve Brodie and Steve Brodie. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Robert Clarke, Steve Brodie, Cameron Mitchell, Robert Christopher, Tain Bodkin.

Disney had an unexpected hit with this predictable comedy about a smug lawyer (Emilio Estevez) busted for drunk driving and ordered to coach a sad-sack team of hockey-playing kids as community service. The kids triumph over their sundry problems, and Estevez’s character grows up a little. End of story. A perfectly harmless movie for kids and adults who are giving their brains a night off. –Tom Keogh

Watch to watch The Last Unicorn online?

Check out this trailer first:

So what’s The Last Unicorn all about?

A story line that truly deserves the A-list treatment, The Last Unicorn is memorable for its attempts to stay faithful to its origins, the Peter Beagle novel of the same name. The animation is vintage Rankin/Bass, and that’s too bad; but there’s an undeniable strength in this tale and telling. A unicorn (Mia Farrow)–she believes herself the last–searches for any others of her kind, while avoiding the malevolent Red Bull, the agent believed to have destroyed the rest of the herd. Along the way, she is mistaken, ignored, attacked, and obsessed about, finally finding help from a magician named Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and a knight named Prince Lir (Jeff Bridges). A haunting film that pays homage to mythology and the people who love it. –Keith Simanton
